Mai Tais and Metaphors: Recipe for a Perfect Blog Post

by Jul 11, 2022

Here’s an out-of-the-box blog post idea, so stick with me.

During the pandemic, I got really into tiki culture and tiki cocktails. I invested in a variety of rum, made sure to have syrups and juices on hand, and made cocktails at least once a week while we were stuck at home.

There’s a lot of debate about what is and isn’t tiki, but my favorite parts include a tropical vibe, surf music, and amazingly complicated cocktails. And if it has a mid-century modern look, that’s perfection.

So what I thought I would do is teach you to make one of the most classic tiki cocktails, the Mai Tai.

It’s not just any Mai Tai; it’s a metaphor.

As I share this recipe, I’ll also talk about how you need to have a good classic recipe with great ingredients to write a great blog post.

The Mai Tai Recipe Ingredients

To make the actual Mai Tai, you’ll need:

  • Fresh Lime Juice
  • Two types of dark rum
  • Orgeat
  • Orange curacao
  • Demerara simple syrup

If you’re a tiki enthusiast, you’ll see the ingredient list isn’t exact. Here’s what I have to say about that: sometimes you have to use what you’ve got. The same is true for a blog post. You can take months and months to prepare and gather all the materials, but eventually, you just have to get started.

Mix It All Together

Once I have the ingredients assembled, I’ll add them to a shaker.

One thing about Tiki cocktails is that they have to be meticulously measured. The same is true with your writing. You want to include just enough but not too much of any topic or idea. Otherwise, the message, like the cocktail, becomes muddied.

Start with 1 ounce of each rum. For tiki cocktails, the rum or other alcohol is the most crucial part. Everything else enhances the flavor of the rum.

For a blog post, this is your thesis statement or the primary message of your blog.

Next, add 1 ounce of lime juice. This adds an acidic and tart factor to the drink. You can include a sour element in your blogs to demonstrate how to turn that around into something extraordinary. Every blog post should answer a problem that your audience may be concerned about or may not have considered but could change their lives.

Add ½ ounce of Orange Curacao. This adds more color and flavor to your drink like you want to add color to your blog post. This unique ingredient makes your blog post stand out from the crowd.

Then a ½ ounce of orgeat. Orgeat is a syrup made with almonds and orange flowers. It adds nuttiness, which for me, means humor. Don’t take yourself too seriously, or you may appear condescending or disingenuous. People like comedy, and it’s okay to poke fun the right way.

Lastly, add ½ ounce of demerara syrup, which gives the drink a little sweetness. This is what I think of as friendliness and kindness in your blog post.

Shake it Up

Now we shake it all up. Yep, just like you would when you write. Sure, you can follow a linear format, but you want to take all of these elements and put them together to create something better than the sum of its parts.

If you made a mai tai, I want to know what you think. And if you use this recipe as a way to write a blog post, I still want to see what you think.
