3 Ideas for Added Value on Your Farm

by Jul 18, 2022

Do you have a hobby or a small family farm and are looking for more ways to monetize? Sure, you could host weddings or an Airbnb, but what if you don’t have a commercial kitchen or space to put a tiny house to rent? What if we told you there were several ways you can add value to your farm just like it is today? Here are three out-of-the-box ideas to get you started.

Host Classes

What do you do that no one in your area does? You are an expert, so teach what you know. People love to learn new things and are always open to new experiences. For example, our town has a local expert who teaches mushroom foraging. You can teach anything from the principles of permaculture to a knitting 101 class. Your farm is perfect for hosting these classes outdoors or in a building on your property. Advertise on social media or your website and ensure you’re charging a fair price that will still earn you extra money.

Sell Meal Kits

Meal kits are a huge business right now. Companies package pre-measured ingredients and recipes and ship them all over the country. Why not bring the focus back to local? Take your CSA to the next level? Curate several recipes and include the ingredients you have on your farm. Package it all together and sell it from your website, at farmer’s markets, or through your CSA. People love an opportunity to go local, and it’s an easier sell when they know what to do with the produce they get.

Create U-Pick Experiences

Never forget the magic of visiting that pumpkin patch every fall when you were a child. Or going apple picking or walking through rows and rows of strawberries or blueberries to gather delicious fruit. Whatever you grow, you can create a U-Pick experience. Provide containers for a fee and let them enjoy a day on your farm without a lot of additional pageantry.
