Pride Month: Let’s Get Active!

by Jun 5, 2023

The stakes have never been higher. This year for Pride Month in June, I think it’s critical to showcase why protecting the LGBTQ+ community is a top priority. There are currently 491 anti-LGBTQ+ bills proposed across the country. This direct attack on the freedoms of people from all backgrounds is entirely antithetical to the ideals America purports to have. We can’t sit back and watch; we must take direct action. Even if you don’t think your voice makes a difference, everyone counts in our country’s fight for basic human rights. Here’s what you should know about the current state of things and LGBTQ+ rights.

Speak Up

The most significant example of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is the state of Florida. Since the Don’t Say Gay bill passed last year, the state government has only doubled down on dangerous legislation. Not only are recently passed bills targeting gay and trans Floridians but also African Americans and immigrants. Florida is becoming a challenging place. What’s important now is that we all speak up when we can. I no longer accept the “nudge nudge, wink wink” commentary from folk who think I might believe as they do just because I am also white.

If you see something, say something.

Support ACLU and HRC

With so much to fight against, several great organizations in the U.S. are working toward equality for all people, including the LGBTQ+ community. The ACLU’s Drag Defense Fund supports performers in states where Drag performances have been banned or restricted. Drag isn’t dangerous, and the targeting of performers is a thinly veiled attack on trans people in these states. Supporting the Human Rights Campaign or HRC is also critical. They work hard to fight proposed bills nationwide to prevent them from becoming laws that will affect LGBTQ+ Americans everywhere.

Vote

It feels like such a small action, but voting may be our most important power as American citizens. It’s critical that every American vote, and if you support the LGBTQ+ community, you must look at which candidates have a track record of protecting the rights of gay and trans people, including children. If you’re not registered to vote, do that as soon as possible. Vote in all elections, including local and midterm. Every vote counts.

Stay Active

If there was one thing that the passing of Marriage Equality taught us is that we can’t rest. Yes, people in America can marry whoever they love, but that doesn’t mean that LGBTQ+ rights are a done deal. We’re seeing now as conservatives are systematically attacking the rights of gay and trans people throughout the country. We can’t assume a battle has been won; we must stay active. Volunteer if you can, or donate to organizations in your area. Attend Drag shows. Go to Pride. Whatever you can do, support your local community and show your solidarity.
