Keep Your Gratitude in a Jar

Keep Your Gratitude In a Jar

We are so excited to share one of our favorite traditions. To be honest, if you read some of the blogs we’ve written for our clients, you’ll see this idea come up again and again. Why? Because it’s such a great activity and we want to share it as often as we can! Regardless of which holidays you celebrate, the end of the year is a great time to count your blessings. But what if you don’t know what to count? Here is a great way to keep your gratitude close to your heart all year long.

Start a Gratitude Jar

What is a gratitude jar? It’s exactly what it sounds like. Pick a container – it can be anything from a mason jar to a decorated box – and keep it in a place you see it. Keep a pen and pad of paper nearby so you can quickly write down the things for which you’re grateful. You can pick any day to start and go for a whole year. We suggest New Year’s Day to begin the year with a clean slate and an open, grateful heart.

What to Write About

I know what you’re thinking. You don’t know what you would write about each day. The message doesn’t have to be complex. Every day, think of just one thing you’re grateful for and write it down. Place it in the jar, and you don’t even need to think of it again. It can even be just one word. And if you’re having a bad day, writing something down for your gratitude jar can help you shift your perspective and think of something positive that’s happened.

The End of Year Celebration

Okay, imagine you’ve spent all of 2022 writing down your gratitude every day. Now you have a jar with 365 folded-up slips of paper. What do you do with it? Well, New Year’s Eve is a great time to look back on everything you’ve accomplished for the year. You can do it with a ritual and toss all of the things you’re grateful for into the fire. Or you can reread them and let them go into recycling. The choice for how you celebrate is up to you.

Give the Gift of Gratitude

We know that having more gratitude shifts our perspective. There is actual science behind the idea that being more thankful helps reduce anxiety and impacts how we grieve after loss. It can simply make you happier in your day-to-day life. An excellent gift for a loved one is the gift of gratitude. Even saying thank you or sending a thank you note can be a wonderful way to show your appreciation for someone else. But why not give them a gratitude jar so they can begin a practice of thankfulness in the New Year?
