Ingredients for Your Farmer’s Market Blog

dpeg Marketing Company's Blog

Farmers’ markets are an incredible way for communities to access locally grown, fresh, and organic food.

When I lived in Atlanta, we were in an apartment complex just off Decatur Square. To get to the nearest produce farm, you had to drive pretty far. But right on the corner of my street, in a church parking lot I could see from my window, was the Decatur Farmers Market every Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning. We made it a part of our weekly ritual to walk over with our reusable shopping bag. We always made a beeline for the pimento cheese, but sometimes she was already sold out.

We relied on meal box subscriptions or food from the grocery store most of the time. But we would always buy something at the farmers market and plan one meal a week around that fantastic food.

While I did follow the Decatur Farmers Market on social media, I knew it existed because I could see it from my fourth-floor apartment window. Imagine how a robust marketing plan could increase visibility and visitors.

Here are some of the key ingredients for a farmer’s market blog.

Local Producers

Your farmer’s market has everything it needs to create a successful farmer’s market blog already. The best resource is your local producers and vendors. They all have stories that will make an incredible showcase on your farmer’s market blog. Not only will that encourage readers to return to your website, but it will also make the Google Gods happy when you add links to the grower’s sites along with creating great content.

Healthy Eating Ideas

You’ve heard of the idea to “shop the perimeter.” The aisles in the supermarket are stocked with pre-packaged and preservative-heavy foods. But if you stick to the perimeter, where the produce, meats, fish, dairy, and bakery are, you’re more likely to get fresh whole foods. A farmer’s market is nothing but a perimeter. Every vendor sells newly harvested, organic, in-season food that makes up a healthy diet. Share ideas to get the community excited.

Diet Trends

By diet trends, we don’t mean fad diets promoted by Hollywood. We mean diets that help many people maintain their health. Examples are keto for diabetes, gluten-free for Celiac Disease, or vegan for anyone who can’t or won’t eat animal products. And while these trends start for medical necessities, they also tend to grow. That means they have massive value. Your farmers market can serve these folks who sometimes feel frustrated by the selection at big grocery stores.

Sample Farmers Market Recipe

At the Farmers Market in Decatur, Georgia, they would have fun events each week that include giveaways, entries into contests, and sponsored goodie bags. They would often provide a recipe card featuring one of the vendors. To entice someone to the market, why not keep a log of recipes on your farmer’s market blog.
Here’s a recipe from when I lived in Georgia and peaches were in season. All ingredients were bought at the farmer’s market except the pork tenderloin and the extras on hand.

Ingredients:
1 Pork tenderloin
Fresh Peaches
One bag Arugula
Feta cheese
Olive Oil
Red wine vinegar
Salt and pepper

Directions:
Set oven to 425 degrees.
Season pork tenderloin with salt and pepper. Brown all sides on the stovetop before transferring to a baking sheet. Roast in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 145. Let rest.
Whisk olive oil and red wine vinegar to make a dressing and season with salt and pepper.
Thinly slice peaches and add to a large bowl with arugula and feta cheese. Toss with dressing.
Slice pork and plate with peach and arugula salad.

This simple recipe was a perfect summertime treat. I remember going to the farmer’s market with some friends who visited us from Asheville that day. We had planned to go out to dinner, but we had to stay in with that fantastic food.
