World Horse Day and National Horse Protection Day
We didn’t mean to start our horse content with something so heavy, but when I was searching for resources to create our content plan, I discovered that March 1st is National Horse Protection Day.
It seemed important that we take a second to talk about this observance and what it means for abused and neglected horses.
The day is also known as World Horse Day and was founded in 2005 by animal behaviorist and horse lover Colleen Paige. It’s not the only pet-related holiday she’s created. She’s the woman behind the days that fill up our social media with cute photos of cats and dogs – National Cat Day and National Dog Day. But these fun days to share pictures have a much deeper meeting and a mission to help animals.
Neglect and Abuse Among Horses
Equine abuse and neglect weren’t things I thought about very often until a friend of mine started a small farm. Not long into her adventure, she posted on social media that she was adopting a donkey. Donkeys are great companions to horses and help keep the coyotes away. But as they went to pick up their new donkey, they learned about two more donkeys who were about to be put on a truck and sold as food.
They couldn’t bear to think of a little donkey and her baby slaughtered, so they put together a fundraiser to rescue them.
The story doesn’t end there. Nearly a year later, she noticed something. The mama donkey was suddenly acting very pregnant. One morning there were four donkeys instead of three. Her quick action saved more lives than she knew.
Equines, including donkeys and horses, are far too often mistreated. That’s why National Horse Protection Day was founded, to spread the word and provide resources for individuals and farms to make a difference.
How to Help
The National Horse Protection Day website offers a few ideas to help out neglected and abused horses if you can’t rescue them yourself. Some ways include:
- Volunteering with a friend, neighbor, or local farm to help care for horses.
- Sponsor a horse at a local shelter while they wait for their forever home.
- Raise awareness in your local community about abuse, neglect, and slaughter of equines.
- Organize a horse food or supply drive for horse rescues in your area.
