Celebrating Women’s History Month: Trailblazers in Agriculture, Equine, Tiny Houses, and Brewing

by | Mar 11, 2024

As the first buds of spring start to peek out, we celebrate Women’s History Month. It’s the perfect time to tip our hats to the remarkable women who’ve left an indelible mark on industries close to our hearts: agriculture, equine, tiny houses, and brewing. So, grab your favorite mug of farm-brewed coffee, and let’s look at these incredible women.

1. Agriculture: Dr. Temple Grandin – The Compassionate Innovator

When discussing agriculture and animal welfare, one name stands out like a beacon: Dr. Temple Grandin. Not only did she revolutionize livestock handling by designing more humane slaughter techniques, but as a person with autism, she brought a unique perspective to understanding animal behavior. Dr. Grandin’s innovations have made her a respected figure in the agricultural world and autism advocacy, proving that looking at things differently can lead to groundbreaking improvements. She reminds us that empathy and innovation can go hand in hand, transforming industries and improving lives.

2. Equine: Julie Krone – The Record-Breaking Jockey

Julie Krone was the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown race and, later, the Breeder’s Cup. Julie shattered glass ceilings with her indomitable spirit and fierce determination. Her achievements have inspired countless women in the equine world to chase their dreams, no matter how high the hurdles. Julie’s story isn’t just about winning races but riding through life’s challenges with grit and grace.

3. Tiny Houses: Dee Williams – The Tiny House Trailblazer

In a world obsessed with “bigger is better,” Dee Williams took a different path – she downsized. Moving into an 84-square-foot tiny house on wheels, Dee became a pioneer in the tiny house movement, advocating for simpler living and environmental sustainability. She’s not just a tiny house designer and dweller; she’s a visionary who saw the potential in living small. Dee’s journey teaches us that happiness isn’t measured in square feet but in the joy of crafting a life filled with purpose and simplicity.

This one is close to my heart as I know Dee quite well. We’ve spoken at several of the same tiny house events across the county. You can read all about her story in her memoir The Big Tiny.

4. Brewing: Carol Stoudt – The First Lady of Craft Brewing

Raise your glasses to Carol Stoudt, the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition and the founder of Stoudts Brewing Company. Before the commercialization of brewing, beer-making was something women did at home. Carol brewed her way into a male-dominated professional beer industry, crafting award-winning beers that have garnered national acclaim. Her pioneering spirit and passion for quality have paved the way for countless women in the brewing industry. Carol’s legacy is a reminder that breaking barriers can be as satisfying as a cold beer on a warm farm day.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let’s remember the contributions of these incredible women who’ve sown seeds of change, galloped past barriers, built dreams from the ground up, and brewed success. They remind us that we can achieve extraordinary things with passion, perseverance, and a pinch of creativity. Here’s to the trailblazing women of yesterday, today, and tomorrow:  may we know them, may we be them, and may we raise our glasses to them!
