Sometimes, when looking for topic ideas, I check out various holidays and observances to see if any relevant days are coming up. This week, I discovered that tomorrow, August 22nd, is National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day. I live in a town where cat ownership is taken very seriously, and we have fantastic veterinarians across the region.
My cat, Toast, just had her annual exam in May, and she’s young and healthy. We had a medical scare many years ago with our previous cat, Piglet. I got her to the vet right away, but she was diagnosed with cancer. We spent several years on treatments for her. She lived to be 17, and it wasn’t cancer but old age that finally got to her. I’m grateful that we had such exceptional medical care for her.
Today I want to share why ensuring your cat makes it to the vet each year is essential.
1. Preventive Care
Regular vet visits allow for preventive care, catching potential health issues early or even preventing them altogether. Vaccinations, parasite control, dental care, and early disease detection can help keep your cat healthier and more comfortable.
2. Early Detection of Health Issues
Cats are known for hiding signs of illness, so it’s often difficult to tell if they’re unwell. Regular veterinary check-ups can help identify health issues that might not be obvious. Detecting problems early can lead to more effective and less costly treatments.
3. Vaccinations
Vaccinations protect your cat from potentially life-threatening diseases. These vaccinations need to be administered on a regular schedule to ensure your cat’s immunity remains strong. In North Carolina, where I live, a rabies vaccine is mandated by law.
4. Dental Health
Dental problems are common in cats and can lead to pain, infections, and other health issues. Regular vet visits can include dental check-ups and cleanings, which can prevent or address dental problems.
5. Parasite Control
Cats can pick up parasites both indoors and outdoors. Regular vet visits include parasite screenings and treatments, helping to keep your cat free from fleas, ticks, worms, and other pests.
6. Nutritional Guidance
A veterinarian can advise your cat’s diet and nutritional needs, helping you ensure your cat receives proper nourishment. Our cats have sensitive stomachs, and finding the right dietary balance took some time. I was grateful for the support.
7. Behavioral Issues
Veterinarians can offer guidance on behavioral issues, such as litter box problems or aggression, which might arise as your cat ages. Our area also has several behavior resources to help.
8. Senior Cat Care
As your cat ages, their health needs may change. Regular vet visits are vital for senior cats, as they may require more frequent monitoring and specialized care.
9. Maintaining a Health Record
Regular vet visits help maintain a comprehensive health record for your cat, which can be valuable in emergencies or if you need to change vets. For many practices, when you establish yourself as a patient, you can access same-day appointments.
10. Building a Relationship with the Vet
Regular vet visits help your cat become more comfortable with vet visits, reducing stress for both you and your pet. It also allows you to establish a good relationship with your veterinarian, making it easier to discuss concerns and make informed decisions about your cat’s care.
I love our vet, The Cat Clinic of Asheville, but many fantastic animal caretakers exist throughout Western North Carolina. We also have an amazing cat-based community called Asheville Cat Weirdos, that’s become a non-profit organization raising money for people unable to afford vet care for their beloved cats.
