Google I/O 2024 threw the internet a curveball this week. The new search engine updates include generative AI search. AI has been all anyone has been talking about in recent months. It’s reaching an entirely new level, and most concerning to website developers and marketers is the use of generative AI in search engine results.
What Does This Mean?
Now, when you enter your search into Google, the first result will be a direct answer to your question generated by AI. These answers, now called AI Overviews, summarize results from multiple websites rather than provide links for users to click to find answers through various sources. Currently, they don’t appear for every search, just the most complex ones, which feels like a respite, but it probably won’t be long before the technology drills down even to the most basic search.
The Pros and Cons
Google is pushing the benefits, of course. This generative AI result will give quick, accurate answers, not unlike how many of us use Alexa or Siri. However, the cons may not be outweighed regarding website traffic, content creation, and publishing on the web. A lack of reach could impact not only brand access but revenue directly. Many creators have raised the concern that AI also pulls information from existing sources but isn’t required to provide credit, much less compensation for using someone else’s work.
The Uncertain Future
The truth is we don’t fully comprehend how the rise of AI will affect us overall. The cries of “robots taking jobs” are both hyperbole and not. It may be that there will be fewer online creators, leading to much less diversity of voices on any given subject when you can ask Google, which will summarize information already available.

The Marketer’s Dilemma
This puts marketers in an interesting position. Will any tricks or tips get you to the head of results in this brave new future? I suggest that what is necessary is to pivot how we market website design, blogging, and branding differently. We won’t be irrelevant, but what we do may evolve.
The Importance of Web Presence
According to Hubspot, a leader in web marketing, websites influence 97% of buying decisions. That means, even without the search engine ranking, companies need a strong web presence and an easy-to-use website that provides value to their audience.
