What Does Sport Horse Mean?

by | Jul 10, 2023

At dpeg Marketing, we do a lot of work with equine businesses. Much of that is through thoroughbred racing, and our work with horseOlogy and Jena Antonucci, but anyone in the horse world knows that the industry is vast and varied. There are so many possibilities when working with horses that it would be impossible to name them all. But one popular category is sport horse. But what does that mean? Well, rather than a breed, it refers to a type of horse trained to participate in equestrian sports, such as the Olympic events like show jumping and dressage. Let’s take a closer look at the world of sport horse.

Horses and Competition

Sport horse competition refers to equestrian events that specifically focus on horses’ athletic abilities and performance. These competitions showcase the horse’s skills in various disciplines, such as dressage, show jumping, and eventing. These are the equestrian disciplines in the Olympic summer games.

Several purebred and crossbred horses can be used in sport horse competitions. The primary focus is on the athleticism of these horses. Here is a list of nine popular sport horse breeds with photos and descriptions to give you an idea.

Show Jumping

Show jumping involves horses and riders navigating a course of jumps within a set time frame. The objective is to clear the jumps without knocking down any rails or obstacles while maintaining a fast and accurate round. This was my favorite event when I was a kid. I would circle the times in the TV Guide so I would be sure to watch during the Olympics.

Dressage

Dressage is a disciplined form of horse training that showcases the horse’s ability to perform precise and controlled movements. It emphasizes harmony, balance, and obedience. For people without experience in equestrian sport, it appears like dancing or ballet. It’s an exquisite sport that requires complete trust and communication between horse and rider.

Eventing

Eventing is a comprehensive competition that combines dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. It tests the horse and rider’s versatility, stamina, and skills in different disciplines. During the Olympics, I like to focus on the cross-country event. This outdoor track has various natural obstacles the horses must navigate, and it’s pretty fun to watch. Right here in Western North Carolina, we have our own equestrian center where these competitions happen.

Creating Content

While I’ve created a sport horse 101 here in this blog, I love researching and can write about a lot more. And that is even more apparent when I genuinely love the subject, like horses. When I work with you, I can create a monthly content plan that covers everything from educational posts to fun topics. I will use your voice and tone to write the posts so they come from you as the subject matter expert. They make great additions to an email newsletter or can be used as smaller blurbs on social media.

I can’t wait to work with your equine business.
