A version of this gift-giving guide first appeared in Tiny House Magazine in December 2017. I’ve updated several of my recommendations for 2022.
With the winter holidays right around the corner, now is a great time to look at gift-giving options for the tiny house enthusiast in your life.
When giving presents to friends and family who have embraced a simpler lifestyle, be sure you’re not perpetuating the culture of clutter. Thinking about how someone has downsized their life allows you to completely re-evaluate how you choose presents. With that in mind, here are some ideas to consider.
Gifts of Experiences
This is, hands down, my favorite idea and the one we make the most use of in our house. These are things your loved one could buy for themselves but probably won’t, and they are thoughtful gifts for someone actively trying not to accumulate stuff.
- Certificate for massage
- Car detailing
- Custom playlist on Spotify
- eBooks
- Tickets to local events
- Subscription to an online magazine or newspaper
- Consumables (especially beer or wine!)
Gifts for the Tiny House Builder
If your loved one is starting to build a tiny house of their own, there may be a few items that would come in handy. Here are some that we found invaluable during our tiny house build. (2022 note: all of these were things we used a lot and cherished when we were building)
- Palm nailer for tight spaces
- Rechargeable Ryobi tools
- Laser level
- Home Depot or Lowe’s gift cards
- Help with a building project
(2022 note: our friends helped us build our tiny house, and we couldn’t have done it without them. We would host camping weekends, feed everyone, and have fun. It is my most beautiful memory from that experience.)
Gifts of Tiny House Books
Many people, even those building or living in a tiny house, love books on the subject. They might want to read about the practical how-to aspects of building or look at other impressive buildings. Here are a few of my favorite tiny house books to get you started. (2022 Note: the first part of this list is books that were invaluable to us while building. I’ve added a couple more)
- Timber Framing for the Rest of Us by Rob Roy
- Working Alone by John Carroll
- Water From the Sky by Michael Reynolds
- Tiny House Living by Ryan Mitchell
- The Big Tiny by Dee Williams
- Life in 120 Square Feet: The Essays by Laura M. LaVoie
