What’s So Important about Logos and Branding?

by | May 22, 2023

How do the biggest brands in the world become instantly recognized? All you have to see is an apple with a bite to associate it with iPhones and other Apple products. Nike may be one of the most recognizable logos in the world, and it’s a simple swoosh. While the vast majority of company logos aren’t going to become as ubiquitous as Nike, they are still critical to your brand identity. Here is what you need to know about having a good logo for your business.

Several things make up a good logo design:

  • Simple: A simple design that is easy to recognize.
  • Memorable: A distinctive design that leaves a lasting impression in the viewer’s mind.
  • Timeless: A design that will remain relevant and effective for a long time.
  • Versatile: A design that can be used across various mediums and sizes without losing its impact or clarity.
  • Appropriate: A design relevant to the brand’s identity, values, and audience.
  • Unique: A design that stands out from competitors and is not easily confused with other logos.
  • Meaningful: A design that communicates the brand’s message, personality, and purpose clearly and creatively.
  • Scalable: A design that can be resized without losing quality or clarity.

While I am not a graphic designer, I have been involved in several logo design sessions and advise against certain things. For example, an illustration doesn’t make a good logo for the reasons above.

Elements of Successful Logos

The design of your logo is very personal. It needs to reflect your company’s values and personality. Along with keeping it simple, other elements that are key to a good design are the right choice of colors, fonts, the overall shape, and the quality of the files so it doesn’t lose clarity at any size. The design should also be relevant to your industry and target audience and be something you can use for a long time.

When I started as a freelancer, I didn’t have any branding. I would piecemeal things together and hope for the best. I tried to create a logo on my own (over ten years ago) to save money and quickly learned why hiring a professional designer was a better solution. You can see my original attempt and my current design above. At the same time, I had a separate blog project I wanted to brand and did the same thing. Trust me; I made the right choice.

Reputation and Recognition

We often talk about how reputation and recognition are critical aspects of marketing. Without either, you will have difficulty attracting and maintaining an audience. Throughout our design work, we create a brand kit for our clients that includes colors, fonts, and logos. This keeps things consistent across all platforms.

Without a brand kit, it’s easy to see how things don’t maintain cohesion. It becomes challenging to recognize something from the same company. It won’t stick in the target audience’s mind, and they will struggle to see the connection.

How to Incorporate Branding Into Your New Website

We have been fortunate to work with an incredible graphic designer who has created logos for several clients, including horseOlogy, SunScape Lawns, Cherrie Hughes LLC, and our design.
