Celebrating Pride Month: Queer Farmers and LGBTQ+ Resources

by | Jun 27, 2022

On June 28, 1969, the most significant event in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights happened in New York City’s Greenwich Village at the Stonewall Inn. When police raided the bar early that morning, the patrons decided they would no longer accept that their lives were considered illegal. While activism on behalf of LGBTQ+ people was already happening across the country, Stonewall lit the fire.

This is why we celebrate Pride every June.

DPEG Marketing is committed to providing dynamic websites and ongoing original content for farmers anywhere. We would love to work with individuals and organizations focused on equality and acceptance for queer people. Since farms are our passion, here are a few things we can share about the LGBTQ+ world of farming.

Queer Farmers Changing the Landscape

Modern Farmer published an article in early 2022 about the way queer farmers are impacting the industry. There will always be differences between family and smaller farms and big agriculture; right now, many LGBTQ+ farmers are stepping to the forefront. The article showcases Hannah Breckbill and her partner who spearhead Queer Farmer Convergence, showcasing the LGBTQ+ community in farming. The next event will occur in Decorah, Iowa, from September 3-5, 2022.

The article shares several other queer farmers making a difference all over the country.

LGBTQ+ Farms Across the U.S.

The website Foodtank published a list in 2020 to share 24 queer farmers and organizations across the U.S.

  • Diaspora Co. is owned and run by queer women of color and based between Oakland, California, and Mumbai, India. Their goal is to decolonize commodity crops, uplift farmers in India, and sell organic spices.
  • The Hudson Valley Seed Company was started in 2004 by a librarian looking to create the country’s first seed library. He and his partner grew the business into a lucrative career selling heirloom seeds.
  • The TransGenerational Farm was founded in New York City by trans woman Jayne Henson. Her mission is to connect the trans community and educate on farming practices and sustainability.

There are many more fantastic examples; we can’t list them all.

Resources for LGBTQ+ Farmers

In our research, we were surprised to discover that the USDA promotes its many resources to the LGBTQ+ community. Disaster recovery assistance, loans, farm insurance, conservation assistance, and safety net programs exist. They can even help with the legal ownership of inherited land if there are complications.

Say it Loud and Proud
