Starting Your Year-End Website Audit

by Oct 24, 2022

For many businesses, the end of the year is the perfect time to go through administrative tasks that need to be done before we turn the calendar. When I worked in staffing, we would use this time to purge outdated documents, organize employee files, and take an inventory of the things we needed in the office. You should include your website in this list of tasks and conduct a year-end website audit.

Websites are no longer static business cards; they’re dynamic and interactive tools essential for your business. Here are a few things you should review before the end of the year and update if necessary.

Your Team Page

Is your team page up to date? Did you hire anyone this past year who is not yet represented? Or is someone still on the page who shouldn’t be? While you’re at it, let’s ensure your team page is optimized. Are there a few keywords sprinkled on the page organically? Do you have up-to-date photos of your team?

Your Services Page

A company’s services page is often the most neglected. Your services evolve and change over time, even over a single year. But did you update your website to reflect that? It’s okay if you can’t get to it every time you make a change, but this time of year is excellent for revamping what it says and optimizing the page for SEO.

Contact Information

We can’t tell you how many times we’ve reached out to companies and discovered their email address is no longer working. And it’s common for Contact Us forms to eventually stop being useful, too, depending on how they were set up the first time. And companies that are working remotely may have given up their office space, so that could be a change on the website as well.

Licenses, Certificates, Accreditations, or Awards

Have you received any updated credentials in the last year? Adding new licenses, certifications, or accreditations to your site will increase your professional image. And don’t forget to add awards that showcase your expertise in your field. Get the icon images of these items and add them to your home page if you can.

SEO

Search engine optimization is the algorithms search engines use to determine if your website is viable and where it would rank on its results. That’s based on how users search for specific keywords that find your website. You’ll want to determine the keywords that work for your page and scatter them organically across your site. Don’t stuff them because that will accomplish the opposite for Google.

New Content

Do you have a blog on your site? A blog is the best way to introduce regular new content to help you rank higher in the search engines. New content is one of the details Google looks for when ranking its sites. Beyond rankings, blogs are also the best way to tell your brand story and get people engaged and coming back for more.

New Tools for Better Integration

We all know technology is essential, but it can also be frustrating. Why do you need so many add-ons and tools to ensure your website runs smoothly? For example, if you want to showcase your reviews, it’s easier to use a plug-in than to copy them onto a web page every time. Or you may want social integration. These things all work together to create a helpful website that, with regular maintenance, will last.
