Leaf Season: Questions for Introspection and Self-Reflection in the Fall

by Oct 17, 2022

I cannot express how much I love leaf season and this time for self-reflection. The leaves on my street are all turning brilliant gold, orange, and red, and all I want to do is snuggle up under a warm blanket with a steaming hot cup of cocoa in my hands. Of course, I don’t have the luxury to do that all day, but a girl can dream.

Even though October brings spooky season and November ushers in feelings of gratitude, there is something else that autumn can provide. For me, it’s all about introspection. A quietness is in the air, and I can consider what I’ve done this year and what I have left to accomplish. As a business owner or entrepreneur like me, your work is a big part of the things you can reflect on. So how can you tap the energy of autumn to evaluate your year and what’s yet to come? Here are several self-reflection questions to get your thoughts started in the right direction.

Do I Use My Time Wisely?

There are very few of us who can answer yes to this question. Humans are not particularly great at time management, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to get better. Use this time to consider new methods to maximize your time, send boundaries, and create patterns that will help you stay focused.

What Do I Take for Granted?

Our lives have so much external stimulation that sometimes it’s hard to take a step back and look at the big picture. We talk a lot about self-care, but that doesn’t mean spa days all the time. Instead, gratitude for the things you have is a way to take care of yourself. To avoid taking things for granted, consider starting a gratitude journal. Look at all the good things you’ve written about when you’re worried or uncertain.

Am I Doing What I Love?

I talked to a client a little while ago who isn’t entirely happy with what they’re doing. They asked about other options and ways they could make money. And while some people make a living on passive income, there is always a lot of work involved in being a solopreneur. I know that if you have a hustle, it ought to be a hustle you love.

How Is Stress or Anxiety Affecting Me?

I have a generalized anxiety disorder. I can spiral quickly over the stupidest things. I’m often just a big ball of anxiety all the time. So I need to be hyper-aware of when stress will impact my well-being and take plenty of breaks to avoid overwhelm. That’s how it affects me, but your stress response could be very different. The key is figuring out what triggers you and working on healthy coping techniques.

Am I Achieving My Goals?

Finally, now is the perfect time to reflect on your goals. What did you set out to accomplish at the beginning of the year? Did you meet your expectations? The critical thing to know about setting goals is that you can and should revisit them to make adjustments. Plan now for the items you want to change in 2023.
